Fridge stopped cooling?

What to Do While You Wait for the Technician

Keep the doors shut and note the time the fridge stopped cooling. Australian food safety advice is:

  • Food held above 5°C for under 2 hours can stay in the fridge
  • Between 2 and 4 hours, use it straight away
  • Over 4 hours, throw it out
  • A full freezer kept shut holds food frozen for up to 48 hours; a half-full one for about 24 hours

Quick checks before you call

  • The power point is on and the inside light works
  • The temperature dial has not been bumped to a warmer setting
  • Food or containers are not blocking the air vents inside
  • The doors close fully and nothing is caught in the seal

Fridge care

Fridge Care Tips for Sydney Homes

Give it room to breathe

Leave the gap your manual asks for at the sides, back and top. In a garage, keep the fridge out of direct afternoon sun.

Clean the condenser before summer

If your fridge has coils at the back or a grille at the base, vacuum them in spring and again in autumn.

Do the paper test on the seals

Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out with no grip, the seal is worn.

Do not overfill

Packed shelves block the vents, which causes warm spots in some areas and frozen food in others.

Set the right temperatures

Fridge 3°C to 5°C, freezer around -18°C.

Change the water filter on time

Fridges with a dispenser need a new filter on the maker’s schedule, or the flow slows and leaks can start.

FAQ

Fridge Repair FAQs

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Give us a call and we’ll help you work out what’s wrong.

My fridge has stopped cooling. What should I do now?

Keep both doors shut and write down the time. Food above 5°C for under 2 hours can stay, between 2 and 4 hours use it straight away, and over 4 hours throw it out. A full freezer kept shut stays frozen for up to 48 hours.

Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?

Usually the fan that moves cold air from the freezer into the fridge has stopped, or ice from a defrost fault has blocked the air path. A faulty damper or sensor can do the same. This is normally a single-part repair, not a failing compressor.

Why is there water at the bottom of my fridge?

The most common cause is a blocked defrost drain, so meltwater collects inside instead of reaching the tray underneath. Water on the floor more often means a cracked drain tray or a leaking water line. Both are common repairs.

How long does a fridge repair take?

Most repairs are finished on site in one to two hours. If a part has to be ordered, we book a return visit to fit it with no extra call-out fee.

What warranty do I get on a fridge repair?

Every repair is covered by a 12-month warranty on parts and a 3-month warranty on labour.

Do you repair built-in and integrated fridges?

Yes. We slide the fridge out of the cabinetry, repair it and refit it without damaging the panels or the door fixings.

Do you repair commercial fridges?

No. We only repair domestic fridges and freezers in homes, units and rental properties across Sydney. We do not service commercial refrigeration such as coolrooms, display fridges or restaurant equipment.
